Do not cancel existing online reservations for 2nd dose of Covishield: Govt | India News

iNEW DELHI: The Union Ministry of Health said on Sunday that anyone who has already made an online appointment for the second dose of Covishield vaccine will be able to be vaccinated.
The clarification comes following the government’s acceptance of a recommendation from an expert panel to increase the time interval between two doses of Covishield to 12-16 weeks from 6-8 weeks previous ones.
The announcement had puzzled some people who had already received the first blow and had booked for the second jab based on the length of time recommended previously.
The Union Health Ministry said the necessary changes have now been made to the Co-WIN digital portal, so that further online or on-site appointments will not be possible if the period after the date of the first dose for a recipient is less than 84 days.
“The Indian government has communicated this change to States and UTs. The Co-WIN digital portal has also been reconfigured to reflect this extension of the interval for two doses of Covishield, manufactured by the Serum Institute of India (SII) at 12-16 weeks, ”the ministry said.
“However, there have been reports in a section of the media suggesting that people who had pre-booked their second dose appointments in less than 84 days on Co-WIN are being turned away from vaccination centers without receiving the second dose of Covishield, “It said.
“In addition, online appointments already booked for the second dose of Covishield will remain valid and will not be canceled by Co-WIN,” he said.
The ministry said states and UTs had been urged to honor appointments already made for the second dose before the change in duration.
But the ministry recommended people postpone their appointments to a later date beyond the 84th day from the date of the first dose given the updated duration.
The time interval between the first and second dose of Covaxin remains at four weeks.
