Sara Errani sent a bold message after winning the US Open mixed doubles championship on Wednesday, August 20 alongside Andrea Vavassori. The defending champions beat Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud in a thrilling final that went to a 10-point tiebreaker in the end. The Italian duo won the revamped version of the tournament at Flushing Meadows 6-3, 5-7, 10-6.
The mixed doubles championship at the US Open was introduced in February this year and was met with backlash from the doubles specialists, who felt they were being denied an opportunity to earn money in the favour of big-name stars. Errani and Vavassori, who labelled the change as 'profound injustice', were given wildcard entries into the tournament.

Speaking after the win, Errani dedicated the win for all the doubles specialists who couldn't be a part of the tournament.
“I think this one is for all the doubles players that couldn’t play this tournament. I think this one is also for them,” said Errani.
Errani also paid tribute to the stars in the player box, which was led by compatriot Jasmine Paolini, and her partner Vavassori.
“We are sharing these moments that are unforgettable,” Errani said. “I’m really happy to share them with you,” said Errani.
Vavassori commented on the win and said that they showed on the day why doubles tournaments are a great product. The Italian said that they need more marketing and visibility in the future and also thanked the fans for showing up for the tournament.
“We showed today that doubles is a great product. I think in the future we need more marketing and visibility. I think this product is something that can also work in the future. It was amazing to play on this court with so many people. I have to say thanks from the bottom of my heart for the atmosphere,” said Vavassori.
Errani and Vavassori used their experience to get past the star duo of Ruud and Swiatek in the final. They received a cash prize of one million dollars for winning the tournament.
