Ben Stokes, the England captain, has showered praise on the opening partnership of Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley after their remarkable stand set up a memorable run chase against India at Headingley. The duo's 188-run partnership laid a solid foundation as England successfully pursued a target of 371 in the fourth innings.
While Duckett's brilliant 149 grabbed headlines, Stokes emphasized that Crawley's crucial knock of 65 was equally important, providing a disruptive and complementary presence at the top of the order.
"When chasing 370, getting off to a good start is paramount. Minimizing early wickets is crucial, and the way Zak approached it alongside Duckett was immense," Stokes commented.
Stokes further elaborated on the effectiveness of the left-right combination: "They complement each other exceptionally well. Left hand, right hand – it’s difficult for bowlers to settle when both are in full flow. Finding a rhythm becomes a nightmare for the opposition when they're at the crease for extended periods. While Duckett scored 149, Crawley's 65 was equally vital. He assessed the situation adeptly, understanding that Duckett was applying pressure, and he complemented that perfectly. This opening partnership has been outstanding for us over the past few years."
Duckett's dominance against Ravindra Jadeja on the final day was particularly noteworthy, showcasing his fearless use of the reverse sweep. Stokes lauded him as one of the best players of spin in the world, especially highlighting his proficiency with that particular shot. "I spoke to him during a tea or rain break," Stokes revealed. "He is among the best in the world at executing reverse sweeps, and he's a phenomenal player of spin, especially on difficult surfaces."
Stokes even sought advice from Duckett during his own innings, seeking to improve his options against spin. "I had a brief discussion with him about potential adjustments to improve my chances. I felt like I needed to either go forward or back and try to manipulate the leg side. Adopting a clear strategy with reverse sweeps was my approach. The conditions were challenging, but I aimed to remain clear and confident in what I needed to do to put pressure back onto the fielders."
This chase marked the sixth time under Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum that England has successfully chased a target of 250 or more in the fourth innings. Stokes believes their simple and relaxed mindset is key to these remarkable achievements.
"We are a very simple-minded pair, Baz and I, when it comes to cricket. Ultimately, it's about scoring one more run than the opposition. We try to keep everything as simple and calm as possible," Stokes explained.
He added, "The atmosphere in the dressing room is crucial when chasing totals like that. The lads need to go out there and execute their roles. Maintaining a calm and relaxed environment is vital for the mindset of the players when they are out in the middle, facing the pressure of the situation."
Regarding the game plan, Stokes concluded, "It was quite simple: if we batted out the remaining overs, we would win the game due to the ground's scoring pace. The scoring rate has been over four an over anyway. It is a very quick-scoring ground."
