Elon Musk, a vocal critic of OpenAI for allegedly abandoning its original mission of developing AI for the benefit of humanity, is making a bold move. His AI startup, xAI, plans to open source its Grok chatbot this week. This decision aligns with Musk's advocacy for broader accessibility to artificial intelligence (AI).
"This week, @xAI will open source Grok," Musk announced on X (formerly Twitter).
Open-sourcing a software like Grok implies making its source code freely available and redistributable. This approach offers significant advantages, particularly for enterprises seeking flexible solutions. Instead of relying solely on internal teams, they can leverage the open-source community to address problems and innovate more rapidly.
The announcement has sparked further debate about OpenAI's commitment to openness.
When a user suggested that OpenAI should follow suit, stating, "OpenAI should do the same if they are 'open' that is," Musk responded sharply: "OpenAI is a lie."
Musk has long championed the open-source model for AI development.
During a podcast with Lex Fridman in November of last year, Musk expressed his strong inclination towards open-source AI. "I am generally in favour of open sourcing, like biassed towards open sourcing," he stated.
This announcement follows the recent release of Grok by xAI, a chatbot reportedly developed in just four months. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded with a post demonstrating how he purportedly built a similar chatbot using GPT Builder with a single prompt, suggesting that "GPTs can save a lot of effort."
Musk, unamused, retorted with a message stating, "GPT-4 is about as funny as a screendoor on a submarine."
