Google has unveiled a comprehensive plan to support the integrity of the upcoming Indian General Elections and protect its platforms from misuse. Recognizing its role in connecting voters with reliable information, the tech giant is implementing measures to combat misinformation, including content generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI).
A key priority for Google is ensuring easy access to authoritative information from trusted sources. In collaboration with the Election Commission of India, Google will prominently display essential details, such as voter registration and voting procedures, on Google Search and YouTube, available in both English and Hindi.
Furthermore, YouTube's recommendation system will prioritize credible content throughout the election period. The YouTube homepage will showcase trusted sources, accompanied by an "Up Next" panel, simplifying access to election-related information for users.
YouTube will also spotlight content from trusted news outlets during pivotal moments via its Top News and Breaking News sections, alongside a dedicated news watch page.
To enhance transparency, Google will implement information panels indicating funding sources for publishers receiving public or government funds. Additionally, panels will provide topical context for subjects susceptible to misinformation.
Google is reinforcing its existing policies to safeguard its products and services from abuse, with the aim of protecting the electoral process. These policies apply universally to all users, regardless of content type.
The company utilizes a combination of human reviewers and AI models to swiftly identify and remove content that violates its policies. Google's enhanced AI capabilities enable more effective action against emerging threats.
Google mandates that advertisers undergo rigorous identity verification and provide certifications from the Election Commission to ensure transparency in election advertising. Election ads must include clear disclosures revealing the advertiser's identity and location. A searchable hub is available, offering insights into election advertisers and their spending.
To address the rise of AI-generated content, Google has introduced new tools and policies designed to identify and mitigate its potential impact. Disclosure requirements are now in place for election ads containing synthetic content. YouTube creators will soon be required to label altered or synthetic content realistically. The updated advertising policies prohibit the use of manipulated media, such as deepfakes or doctored content, to mislead voters.
Google has also implemented restrictions on Gemini, limiting its responses to specific types of election-related queries and prioritizing high-quality information. Features like the "About this Image" tool in Search and digital watermarking for AI-generated images will provide users with context and aid in assessing credibility.
Google has joined the C2PA coalition, a cross-industry initiative dedicated to promoting transparency and context for AI-generated content. The company has confirmed the deployment of technology specifically designed to counter harmful AI-generated content intended to deceive voters during the 2024 elections.
