Sharan Hegde, entrepreneur and creator of the popular "Finance With Sharan" YouTube channel, recently experienced a security breach. His YouTube account was hacked, leading to unauthorized live streams and temporary content loss.
Hegde reported the incident via his personal Instagram, explaining that hackers hijacked his account and began live streaming Bitcoin prices. These streams falsely indicated Bitcoin reaching $100,000.
According to Hegde, the hackers deleted all the content from his channel as part of their intrusion, however, the content was recovered later.
He shared his frustration in an Instagram post: "The hacker took control of the account & started a live stream of Bitcoin prices reaching $100k - without my consent, of course. Within minutes, I got 100s of DMs from you guys informing me about the fact. Thank you so much for alerting me but unfortunately the channel got terminated & I didn't know what to do. My 3 years of hard work just disappeared right in front of my eyes.”
This incident highlights the ever-present risk of cyberattacks and the importance of robust account security. Here are some tips to protect your YouTube channel and other online accounts.
YouTube offers comprehensive advice on its official support page to help users protect their accounts. Here's a summary of key recommendations:
Create a Strong Password: A complex password is your first line of defense. Use a combination of letters (uppercase and lowercase), numbers, and symbols. Never share your password with anyone.
Regular Security Checkup: Utilize Google's Security Checkup feature. This tool scans your account for potential vulnerabilities, weak passwords, and unauthorized access. It then provides guidance on necessary actions.
Enable 2-Step Verification: Two-step verification (also known as two-factor authentication) adds an extra layer of security. Even if someone knows your password, they'll need a second code (usually sent to your phone) to access your account.
Remove Suspicious People from Your Account: Regularly review who has access to your account and remove anyone you don't recognize or trust.
Remove Unnecessary Sites and Apps: Revoke access from any third-party apps or websites that you no longer use or trust. These apps could pose a security risk.
Update Your Software and Back Up Your Account: Keep your operating system, browser, and other software up to date. Regularly back up your important data to prevent loss in case of a breach or other unforeseen event.
Protect Against Suspicious Messages & Content: Be wary of phishing scams and malicious links. Never click on links from unknown senders or download suspicious files.
Manage Access Requests Properly: Use YouTube's permission settings to grant appropriate access levels to trusted users who manage your channel. Don't give unnecessary permissions that could be abused.
