The World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle has commenced with a flurry of activity, as three Test series have already begun to shape the leaderboard. While Australia and England have taken an early lead, India and the West Indies are in pursuit of lost ground.
Australia and England currently hold the top two positions in the WTC standings, both teams with a perfect 100% points percentage after securing victories in their initial matches. Sri Lanka is in third place after concluding their two-match series against Bangladesh with a win and a draw. Bangladesh is in fourth place, with a draw and a loss.
Meanwhile, the reigning champions South Africa, New Zealand, and Pakistan are yet to begin their WTC campaigns in this cycle.
India's opening match was not successful, despite a strong fight at Headingley. The visitors had five centurions in the match, but they still lost as England made a dramatic chase to take a 1-0 lead in the five-Test Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
England, chasing a target of 371, were powered by a strong opening stand between Ben Duckett (149) and Zak Crawley, while Joe Root and debutant Jamie Smith led the chase with an undefeated partnership. Shubman Gill's team regretted a middle-order collapse and dropped catches, which turned out to be costly.
After the match, Gill admitted that India had their chances but failed to take them. He said that India was aiming for a bigger lead, but a lack of runs from the lower order affected their plans.
India will now shift its focus to the second Test at Edgbaston, hoping to recover quickly and keep its WTC campaign alive. For now, however, they are near the bottom of the table with the West Indies.
The WTC cycle began with Sri Lanka's tour of Bangladesh on June 17 and will continue until the final in 2027.
