Yashasvi Jaiswal, the dynamic Indian opener, is on the cusp of achieving a significant milestone in his Test career. He is just 97 runs short of becoming the quickest Indian batsman to reach 2,000 Test runs. This feat could see him eclipse the long-standing record held by Sunil Gavaskar for 49 years, as India prepares to face England in the second Test at Edgbaston starting July 2.

Jaiswal's consistent performance has been a major positive for India, especially during this transitional phase in Test cricket. His recent century in the first Test at Headingley demonstrated his class, although it wasn't enough to prevent India from suffering a five-wicket defeat. Despite setting a challenging target of 371 runs, India was taken by surprise by England's successful chase, led by Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, and Joe Root, which gave England a 1-0 advantage in the five-match series.
Jaiswal's individual form remains a beacon of hope for India as they look to rebound at Edgbaston. In just 20 Tests, he has accumulated 1,903 runs, boasting an impressive average of 52.86.
The current record holder, Sunil Gavaskar, reached the 2,000-run mark in his 23rd Test back in 1976. Gavaskar later became the first player to score 10,000 Test runs. Following Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag achieved the milestone in their 25th Tests.
Jaiswal, known for his elegant strokeplay and composed demeanor, now has an opportunity to not only join but also surpass these legendary players. This achievement would provide India with a significant morale boost in a crucial must-win Test match.
