Former England captain Nasser Hussain has shared his thoughts on Jofra Archer's inclusion in England's Test squad, labeling it a "gamble worth taking." However, he also advised caution regarding his immediate inclusion in the playing XI for the second Test against India at Edgbaston.
Jofra Archer makes his return to the England Test squad.
Archer, last seen in a Test match in February 2021, has been named in the squad for the second Test commencing on July 2nd. The 30-year-old has been plagued by persistent elbow and back injuries, recently making his return to red-ball cricket for Sussex, where he bowled 18 overs against Durham, securing figures of 1/32.
Hussain, in his analysis on Sky Sports, acknowledged the emotional and physical challenges of Archer’s return. "Firstly, it's fantastic news for both Archer and England. Jofra has undoubtedly endured a great deal with these injuries, the rehabilitation process, the pain, and the mental strain of repeated injuries and comebacks. It's truly encouraging to see him back in the squad. He hasn't played a Test match for four years."
Despite the excitement surrounding Archer's return, Hussain urged against immediately thrusting him into the Edgbaston Test. "Introducing him into the XI this week carries considerable risk. However, if his recovery progresses exceptionally well – and I am not privy to the specifics of Jofra Archer's physical condition – they might consider playing him this week. The challenge then becomes, who makes way?"
Nonetheless, Hussain expressed optimism regarding the long-term benefits of Archer’s comeback. "While I maintain that it is a gamble worth taking, I am uncertain if this week is the appropriate time. I would consider it more strongly a week later at Lord's."
England currently leads the five-match series 1-0 following their five-wicket victory at Leeds. The remainder of the squad remains unchanged for Edgbaston.
Ben Stokes (capt), Jofra Archer, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes.
