Uncertainty Surrounds Bumrah's Fitness as India Gears Up for Second Test
Birmingham, UK: The Indian cricket team commenced their preparations for the crucial second Test with an intense three-hour training session in Birmingham. The weather provided ideal conditions, with a gentle breeze complementing the sunshine.
The team, led by Shubman Gill, arrived at the venue around 9:15 am local time, with all players present. However, Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna were notable absentees from the net session, despite traveling with the squad. While they did not leave the stadium premises, their absence raised concerns about their fitness.
Mohammed Siraj focused on his batting skills, receiving guidance from batting coach Sitanshu Kotak. He dedicated nearly 30 minutes to drills aimed at improving his technique against various deliveries.
The absence of Bumrah and Krishna from the bowling drills has fueled speculation. It is possible that this is a part of workload management plan for the ongoing tour.
The primary concern within the Indian camp revolves around the availability of premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah for the second Test. A decision regarding his participation will be made after consulting with the medical team.
This situation presents an opportunity for other bowlers to step up. Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh bowled and batted extensively, under the watchful eyes of head coach Gautam Gambhir and the support staff.
Arshdeep Singh has been working closely with bowling coach Morne Morkel, refining his run-up, back-foot landing, and overall alignment. The duo consistently exchanged feedback. Arshdeep maintained his intensity throughout the session, even during extended spells, matched by fellow seamer Akash Deep.
If Bumrah is ruled out, either Arshdeep or Akash could be included in the Playing XI. India requires a new-ball bowler with the ability to control the ball and exploit any movement on offer, attributes that both possess.
While the Test match is still some days away, both seamers are making a compelling case for selection during training.
