A potential future star of Indian cricket has emerged, creating a buzz both with his performance and his choice of jersey. Vaibhav Suryavanshi, a 14-year-old, made a memorable debut for India U19 against England U19 in a one-day match at the County Ground in Hove. He blasted a quickfire 48 runs off just 19 balls.
The most striking aspect of his debut, which quickly gained traction on social media, was his jersey number: 18. This is the same iconic number famously worn by Virat Kohli.
Fans immediately picked up on the significance, with many interpreting it as a symbolic passing of the torch.
While drawing parallels to Kohli at this stage might be premature, Suryavanshi’s aggressive style and impressive strokeplay certainly made a strong statement.
Opening the innings, the young talent spearheaded India’s pursuit of 175 runs with a flurry of boundaries and towering sixes. Alongside captain Ayush Mhatre, the pair swiftly accumulated 71 runs in just 7.3 overs. Suryavanshi's innings featured five sixes and three fours before he was caught for 48 off 19 balls, narrowly missing a debut half-century.
India U19 ultimately secured a comfortable six-wicket victory. Wicketkeeper-batter Abhigyan Kundu sealed the win with an unbeaten 45, including a match-winning six. Earlier in the match, the Indian bowlers dismissed England for 174, with Kanishk Chouhan leading the charge, taking 3 wickets for 20 runs.
Suryavanshi had previously expressed his excitement about playing in English conditions. "I will get a good experience of playing in England. We will try to win a trophy from there as well,” he stated before the tour. Based on his debut performance, it is clear that he intends to dominate, not just participate.
Wearing the No. 18 jersey carries significant expectations, but Vaibhav Suryavanshi appears ready to embrace the challenge. Indian cricket enthusiasts might have just discovered their next big star.
